Practical guide

Add notes to a PDF and save a separate copy

Use the editor to add visible text, highlights and drawings to an existing document. Page tools help fix orientation or remove unwanted pages. Adding a text box is different from changing the underlying document’s original text.

Step by step

  1. Choose a PDF or drop it into the editor. Keep an untouched copy on your device.
  2. Select the text, drawing or highlight tool, then place the annotation on the page. Review its size, colour and position.
  3. Save your changes and download the result. Open the downloaded PDF in another reader and check every changed page.

Before you start

Drawing over information is not secure redaction. Hidden or underlying text can remain recoverable. Password-protected files may need to be unlocked with an authorised PDF application first. Editing a digitally signed document can invalidate its original signature.

Example workflow

To return comments on a draft report, add a short note beside the paragraph and highlight the relevant sentence. Download a new copy with a name such as report-comments.pdf so the original remains available.

If the result is not what you expected

If text appears in the wrong place, check the page orientation and try a shorter text box. If the document will not open, try a small, unprotected PDF to distinguish a file problem from a browser problem.

Keep your original file and check the downloaded result before sharing. Large files may exceed your browser’s memory. Need help? Contact us with the tool name and your browser version; please do not send private documents.

Frequently asked questions

▶Is GetPDFTool really free?

Yes. The PDF editor is 100% free to use, with no sign-up, no trial period, and no watermarks added to your files. Advertising may help support the site.

▶Are my files uploaded to your servers?

No. Editing happens entirely inside your web browser using JavaScript. The PDF you open never leaves your device, which keeps your documents private.

▶What kinds of PDFs can I edit?

Most standard PDFs — including text documents, scanned pages, forms, and reports. Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked first using your password.

▶Will my edits look the same when I download the file?

Yes. When you click Download, we generate a brand-new PDF that includes your text, drawings, highlights, page rotations, and deletions exactly as you arranged them.

▶Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser works: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Brave, Opera, and others. For best performance we recommend keeping your browser up to date.

▶Do you have other PDF tools?

Yes. Use the tool catalogue to merge, reorder, add, copy, delete or rotate pages, compress a document, place a signature or watermark, or convert supported files. Read each tool’s guide for its limits.
